4 x 10
Every story tells a picture.
The Roslyn Smorgon Gallery has been given over to the private thoughts and personal reflections of a self-selected community of artists engaged in contemporary art practices with a socially aware slant. Each has been asked to take up the role of curator, nominating an artist and artwork that speaks to them – stating something about identity, community, place and voice. The baton is passed and each artist in turn repeats the task, creating both a conversation and an exhibition formed with a collective curatorial voice.
More than simply self-indulgence on the part of a collection of locally engaged artists, 4 x 10 lays bare the hidden sphere of personal musings and subjective choice – the way we make judgements and assessments about others in our shared space; the impressions they leave and the influence we exert. It also traces the way communities are formed while asking questions about the creation of meaning in an artwork and the validity of a singular authorial voice.
