The Democratic Set
Create a 15 second performance or video portrait and become part of a unique film.
The Democratic Set is an innovative residency model for creating short films and performances in collaboration with the local community.
Back to Back Theatre together with the team at FCAC will collaborate with community participants to create short live performances and screen-based video portraits to present ideas around the themes of democracy, equality and freedom. The 40 individual stories will be ultimately stitched together as part of an intensive editing process with the final piece, The Democratic Set 40 Stories being screened in September for a general audience as part of the FCAC birthday celebrations.
Back to Back Theatre has delivered this project both nationally and internationally. The performances are always insightful, funny, hard-hitting and heartfelt – but above all, that are deeply human. The project explores the belief that all people are in principal equal and should enjoy equal social, political and economic rights and opportunities. Contributions are neither restricted or censored.

About Back to Back Theatre.
Based in Geelong, Back to Back Theatre is a regional theatre company of national and international significance. Back to Back creates new forms of contemporary theatre imagined from the minds of a unique ensemble of actors with disabilities, giving voice to social and political issues that speak to all people.
During its 26-year history, Back to Back Theatre has presented its work in over 68 cities. The company has been the recipient of 15 national and international awards, including a 2012 Helpmann for Best Play for Ganesh Versus the Third Reich and the 2012 Australian Disability Service Award of Excellence for exemplary employment for people with disabilities. In addition to mainstage productions, Back to Back Theatre works in community contexts in Geelong and around the world, with a focus on artistic experimentation.
With a full time ensemble of five actors, Back to Back creates work that is idiosyncratic, passionate and at times confronting. With Bruce Gladwin as Artistic Director, Back to Back Theatre has nurtured a unique artistic voice, placing the ensemble at the centre of social and cultural dialogue. Through a process of research, improvisation and scripting, and collaboration between the ensemble, Artistic Director and invited guest artists, new work is realised.
The Geelong-based company is now one of Australia’s most globally recognised and respected contemporary theatre companies.
