School Holiday Arts Program (January)
Fill your school holidays with extreme arts!
Our January school holiday program is exploding with creative and participatory workshops in circus, installation and exhibitions, sonic sound, printmaking and street art.
FCAC’s Extreme Arts is no standard, ‘run of the mill’, school holiday program! Children aged 6 –12 years create and collaborate alongside outstanding artists from the community to learn new skills, make new friends and have a whole lotta fun.
Younger children (6 – 9yrs) will partake in two workshops per day and the older children (10 – 12yrs) participate in one day intensives. The workshop program is delivered 10am-3pm and before/after care is available too (8:30am – 5pm).

Program for children 6 – 9 years (Grade 1-4):
Children 6-9 years rotate through two workshops each day. Generally the children are grouped into Grade 1-2 (6-7 yrs) and Grade 3-4 (8-9yrs) groups and explore:
Silent disco & make your own ‘Beats 101’!
Get into this unique silent disco tour with an added twist! You’ll all wear headphones, listening to the same playlist whilst dance artist Jonathan Sinatra and musician Razz Mussen take you on a tour of the inside and outside spaces of FCAC. You’ll then work with Razz, in pairs, using Garage Band on iPads, to create your own grooves & play with digital drum kits & samples. Finish the session with another silent disco FCAC adventure!
Creative Circus (part 1)
Run away with the circus and join experienced circus trainers and performers, Franca Stadler and Maya Green, who will get you balancing, tumbling, and undertaking aerial tricks. Over two days you’ll explore a host of different circus techniques from tissue loops to trapeze and everything in between. The best thing is circus is non-competitive and suitable for kids at all levels.
Readymades and create your own exhibition! (part 1)
See the everyday in new ways with Beth & Mike from the indirect Object in a two-day workshop exploring the Dada concept of ‘Readymades’! Through using everyday found objects (suitcases, cushions, chairs, and more) plus a whole pile of colourful, playful junk wastage from transparent recycled plastics, string, paper to whatever you can get your hands on, you’ll create found object sculptures for a group installation. Bring your imagination and think big.
Creative Circus (part 2)
Continue where you left off yesterday with experienced circus trainers and performers, Franca Stadler and Maya Green. Indulge in exploring range of circus techniques with added fun and games too.
Readymades and create your own exhibition! (part 2)
You’ll continue on the previous day’s workshop with the indirect Object to bring to life the installation and exhibition in the main FCAC Roslyn Smorgon Gallery (exhibition will be up till January 24th) – so bring your friends and family!
Join artist Jamie Rawls in a printmaking workshop focused on collage and drawing. This workshop will take you through the steps of how to make a monotype resulting in your very own gift cards or a print to hang on your wall at home. This ‘age old’ and approachable medium is super satisfying and a fun process as you are required to work relatively quickly to beat your ink drying on the plate. Using etching ink, plastic plates, briars and a printing press this is an easy introduction to printmaking.
Program for children 10 – 12 years (Grade 5-6):
Children participate in a whole one day intensives in these artforms:
Readymades and create your own exhibition!
Collaborate with Beth and Mike from the indirect Object and create a unique installation and exhibition in FCAC’s main gallery exploring the Dada concept of ‘readymades’! In using found objects, and junk wastage, you’ll get your hands on the large window in the main gallery and explore everything around light, shadow, and colour. Exhibition will be open to January 24th – so bring your friends and family down.
Learn the art and techniques of the spray can and discover some of street art’s freehand and stencil techniques with graffiti artist SEARious Jones.
Run away with the circus and join experienced circus and training performers, Franca Stadler and Maya Green, who will get you balancing, tumbling, and undertaking aerial tricks. In this one day intensive you’ll also explore creating your own juggling balls . Best thing is circus is non-competitive and suitable for kids at all levels.
