West Writers Forum 2018: Day Two


Writing Forward – Exploring the current and future forms of storytelling

Featuring an impressive line-up of emerging and established storytellers, the day two program includes a series of panels, workshops and performances exploring current conversations such as: decolonisation, multilingual writing, non-fiction and the power of imagery.

One Night Stanza: FOOTSCRAY&BROOKLYN BLOCK PARTY will conclude Day Two of the West Writers Forum. An ode to the Brooklyn block party scene, catch exclusive performances by Brooklyn-based DJ Jive Poetic and local acts Manisha Anjali, Luka Lesson, Amal Ibrahim and more!

Writing the Real: The Practice and Politics of Writing Non-Fiction
Join acclaimed writer, historian, researcher, and translator Maria Tumarkin for this intensive introductory workshop into writing and researching long-form non-fiction. Maria will guide you through some key tips, advice and skills as well as take you through her own process and practice. The workshop will cover areas such as interviewing subjects, researching historical details, navigating sensitive subject matters, and structuring narratives.

What does a decolonised visual culture look like? What exactly does decolonisation in art mean? How can art be perceived as a medium through and with which processes of decolonisation are initiated? Join these artists whose work spans medium and form for a conversation about the power of image and the image of power.

What is Multilingual Writing?

Most people in the world speak more than one language at home, and writers are no exception. This panel of writers will unpack some of the assumptions about multilingualism and creativity that we encounter in our work – some external and some internalised – and talk about what weaving our languages into our writing has taught us.

Rage: A Djed Press Showcase
Djed Press is an online publication that exclusively works with and publishes Australian-based peoples of colour (POC), committed to challenging the insufficient representation of marginalised people in the literary landscape today as well as addressing the rampant problem of unpaid labour. Sit back, relax, and enjoy listening to the work of some of our 2018 Featured Authors.

Can you remember the first time you read your favourite writer? Are there specific lines or passages or even entire books that have wormed their way into you, and rearranged something in your head? These writers will share their deeply held works by their favourite writers, and talk about what it is about these works that speak to them so deeply.

Performance Poetry Workshop (SOLD OUT!)
DJ Jive Poetic
Brooklyn’s DJ Jive Poetic brings his power, words, wisdom and energy to Footscray in homage to the Brooklyn block party scene. Jive will be joined by a host of local and interstate artists, coming together in a night of collisions, connections and joy. Along with a live performance, the internationally renowned poet will also facilitate a free performance poetry workshop to get you writing and performing.

WHEN: Saturday 28 July, 1pm – 3pm
VENUE: Big Fish Studio
TICKETS: Bookings essential. Due to the limited capacity of this workshop, bookings must be made prior to the Forum and separately from the Forum passes. Purchasing a Forum pass does not secure a place in this workshop.


Nikki Lam Artist Talk
Join artist and curator Nikki Lam for a talk about her latest exhibition. Before After 以前丶以後 is part visual memoir, part investigation of our connections to place through gestures. This is an attempt to portray the remembering of a migrated history. In this talk Lam discusses the themes and processes to her work and what inspires her practice.

Notes in a Time of Crisis

The world we live in is one of rising sea levels, shifting human landscapes, and unspeakable cruelties inflicted on those of us that are most vulnerable. How do we reckon with this? Four writers will share with you their hopes and their fears in this time of crisis.
