Windmills in Motion
Windmill Collective celebrates the life and legacy of Hague-born Frans Houkes. Exploring themes of displacement, alienation, and belonging, works represent émigré and local artists in search for their own visual language. The project gives recognition to FCAC’s ongoing support throughout the years to both émigré and local artists at the centre and beyond.
Featuring works by Robert Mihajlovski, Kerry Hermann, Ian Cuming, Peter Long, Kevin Mullan, Milos Manojlovski, Blagoya Velkovski, Neboysha Simic and Fassih Keiso. The exhibition is curated by Domi Córdoba.
OPENING: Saturday 1 October, 2pm – 3:30pm
EXHIBITION: Thursday 29 September – Saturday 12 November
VENUE: FCAC Gabriel Gallery
The Thousand Handed Hydra – Artists from 4 Continents (1994) Catalogue Essay by Elizabeth Gertsakis.
The Thousand Handed Hydra was an exhibition held in Access Gallery at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1994. The one-year pilot project was initiated by FCAC to provide a training and bridging program for professional visual artists who had recently migrated to Australia.
Hydra Studio was a shared artist studio in the former Ryco Warehouse since 1993. The project facilitated exhibitions, workshops and publications that focused on working with artists from non-English speaking backgrounds.
FCAC continued to host artist-in-residence program in the former Ryco Warehouse until the centre’s expansion in 2011.
Presented as part of FCAC’s Call to Create program in association with Windmill Collective for Melbourne Fringe Festival 2016.
