Wominjeka Festival 2019: River & Waterways Conversation

Led by Elders-in-Residence, Water Talks is a discussion about the future of the Maribyrnong river and our waterways, and how we can protect community interests in the face of gentrification and urban development. This discussion focuses on Aboriginal knowledge and cultural relationships with the river, and explores how a deeper understanding and prioritising knowledge will engender both culturally sensitive and sustainable urban outcomes that benefit the community.

Aboriginal culture is not a culture of the past. It is alive and present. The knowledge that Aboriginal people hold, which comes from 80,000 years of living on this land, should be respected. Learning about how our built environment interacts with our waterways is vital to not just the quality of life of our cities, but also to the health of the waterways that maintain those cities.
