Footscray Community Arts is proud to highlight the significant contribution of our Indigenous Advisory Group member, Karen Jackson, in the launch of Victoria University’s (VU) First Nations Action Plan.

VU Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker and Director of VU’s Moondani Balluk Indigenous Academic Unit Karen Jackson have jointly launched the First Nations Action Plan 2025-2028, which aligns to the University’s strategic commitment to Protecting Country. 

Karen Jackson, a Yorta Yorta woman, has been instrumental in shaping this comprehensive framework. The plan advocates for privileging First Nations Peoples’ cultural practices, with guidance from Elders and Knowledge Holders on learning, teaching, research, and community engagement.

Ms Jackson says “The First Nations Action Plan is a crucial step in acknowledging the need for positive and progressive change, and working together with commitment, connection and courage. The plan will drive positive outcomes for the lives of First Nations students and staff.”

“We are asking non–First Nations students and staff to listen deeply, do the heavy-lifting and seek out the many available tools that are required to meet these challenges.”

At Footscray Community Arts, we are privileged to have Karen as a member of our Indigenous Advisory Group. Her leadership and advocacy for culturally safe spaces enable Aboriginal people to aspire to personal, family, and community goals, land rights, and the recognition of Sovereign Peoples. She champions the delivery of relevant educational programs by Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people.
