Event Information

Gathering, making and yarning are key practices that uphold First Nations values of sharing stories, building connections, healing and community care. With a focus on possum skin cloak making, these practical workshops prioritise the sharing of culturally-significant knowledge and skills to young Aboriginal participants.

Young artists Aaron Clarke and Yaaran Bundle will lead the creative process. They will be supported by Footscray Community Arts Elders in Residence Dr Narweet Carolyn Briggs AM and Uncle Larry Walsh, as well as senior possum skin cloak artists Maree Clarke and Vicki Couzens.

Participants will contribute to the creation of a new communal ceremonial possum skin cloak to be held by the Footscray Community Arts’ Indigenous Advisory Group.

If you’re interested in our Indigenous Cultural Program, make sure to check out Wrapped in Culture, an online exhibition showcasing the contemporary Australian-Aboriginal possum skin cloak and the North American-Aboriginal buffalo robe as developed during an international exchange with Ottawa Art Gallery.

This project was made possible through the Victorian State Government COVID-19 Aboriginal Community Response and Recovery Fund and Creative Victoria.
