WANITA: Female Artivism – Jakarta! — Curatorial Statement

It’s your fault you came to Jakarta!
Siapa Suruh Datang Jakarta?

We think one of the most interesting and also challenging parts of being a female artist in Jakarta is how we juggle between making ends meet whilst also having the time to make sure our art keeps growing beautifully. Apart from that, being such a large city with terrible traffic makes Jakarta itself another challenge to deal with every day!

Still, as you can see here, we are all having fun making art and craft with a huge variety of medium, technique and messages. This exhibition is a celebration of our daily life as women, artists, crafters and our love and hate relationship with the city itself.

Through the thirteen artists whose works we have selected here, hopefully we have been able to show you a glimpse of our independent arts and craft scene in Jakarta today.
