Exhibition Date: 13 September 2022 — 1 February 2023
Through Citizen, FONI seeks to normalise the place of South Sudanese communities within Australian society. In developing Citizen, FONI’s process involved inviting South Sudanese Australians to take part in conversations while being photographed for their portraits.
Stories were shared about diasporic feelings of longing to belong, of achieving dreams, of racial issues, the generational disconnects, communication challenges, the struggle to be themselves, and their shared isolations. Experiences were echoed about the shifts undertaken when moving between lands – changes in behaviour, ideology, and self-image.
Through this series of oil portraits, FONI aims to illustrate the personalities and dreams of each member of the South Sudanese community as individuals.

Meet the Artist
is an African Australian artist living in the West. I currently study Bachelor of Design at LCI Melbourne, and volunteer at Trocadero Art Space. My painting practice at the moment explores identity, deterioration, and power dynamics. I aspire to celebrate my heritage and communicate my thoughts through art. My aim is to contribute to my community, enrich my space, and also continuously learn and grow in my field. Very eager to meet new people with different perspectives and knowledge.
