New Footscray Hospital Photography Competition

Of Place: Connections to Nature and Wellbeing

Melbourne’s western suburbs are invited to take part in a new photography competition and prize, with selected photographs to feature throughout the new Footscray Hospital.

The competition’s theme of place: connections to nature and wellbeing encourages entries that respond to the natural elements found in the western suburbs that will bring a sense of calm to hospital patients and visitors.

The competition is free to enter and open to everyone from curious beginners to seasoned photographers. You don’t need a professional camera, just a keen eye for capturing everyday moments that connect to nature and place.

Selected photos will be featured in an exhibition at the new Footscray Hospital and displayed digitally on patient room screens when the hospital opens.

The photography competition forms part of hospital’s integrated public art and curatorial theme ‘of place’, with artworks that will be calming, restorative and immersive, playing an important role in providing hospital users with a sense of cultural safety.

We invite you to turn your lens towards the patterns, landscapes and still moments in nature that offer quiet beauty, emotional rest and connection to place.

Whether it’s the changing sky over Werribee, a still morning in St. Albans, or the glint of water in the Maribyrnong River, your photograph could become part of a collective visual offering that welcomes, grounds and restores.

We especially welcome works that are immersive, soothing, or that gently evoke our shared human relationship with nature, particularly the often overlooked or quietly powerful aspects of the west.

This is your hospital and you’re invited to help shape it.
