Statement of Solidarity

Footscray Community Arts
Statement of Solidarity

We are writing to join the worldwide call for a permanent and enduring ceasefire in Gaza.

In the face of distressing violence in Occupied Palestine and surrounding region, we express our solidarity with global communities profoundly affected by persistent violations of the core principles of International Humanitarian Law and acts of terrorism.

As the scale of the humanitarian crisis continues to escalate in and around Gaza, we have heard clearly from community that adding our voice to the public call for a permanent ceasefire and the release of hostages is vital in the global movement seeking peace. Our decision to speak now is centred in care and safety for community — reflected in our Artists, Elders, Staff, and Board — and aligns with our unwavering dedication to uphold cultural agency and self-determination.

Our commitment to being a community-led organisation prompts us to acknowledge that silence in such times can perpetuate harm rather than healing and we stand with all artists and communities calling unequivocally for an end to violence.

For 50 years, Footscray Community Arts has been a place for communities often ignored by mainstream cultural institutions to gather, share stories, and advocate. We offer space and a platform in Melbourne’s west for artists to speak for themselves and we will continue to program at the intersection of social justice and creativity.

We acknowledge that this is one of many conflicts currently occurring globally, and we stand in solidarity with all suffering under oppressive violence – our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with you.
