Our vision is that all communities are valued as makers of culture, and we further that vision through creative programming that nurtures and grows contemporary art practice that is community-led.

Our Board is comprised of people with a range of valuable skills that support our governance and strategic direction.

For this round of appointments to the Board we are particularly interested in people who are skilled or experienced with:

  • Financial Management
  • Organizational Governance
  • Partnerships & Development (Fundraising)
  • Advocacy to Government
  • Legal Expertise
  • Identify with or have lived experience of one or more of the communities we centre and prioritise (First Nations, culturally diverse, people who are D/deaf or have lived experience of disability, and people who are a member of the LGBTIQA+ community).

FAQs

What is happening in 2024?

It’s an exciting time to join Footscray Community Arts as we embark on a transformational project that will reimagine our outdoor precinct into a new outdoor performance space following a landmark investment of $8.7m by the Victorian Government.

2024 is also our 50 Year celebration where we reflect on the legacy of a place that has always actively championed for the arts in Melbourne’s West and is a custodian of cultural agency for the communities we centre and prioritise.

What does the Board of Directors do?

The Board meets up to eight times per year, to advise the Executive Team on the governance and strategic direction of Footscray Community Arts. This includes our regular board meetings, subcommittee meetings, AGM and strategy and planning days.

Directors will consider the financial and strategic performance of the organization, provide support and guidance to the Executive Team and take carriage of decision-making as it relates to our policies and strategies.

Board members will also be asked to nominate to one of our Subcommittees: Finance, or Risk, Compliance and Governance. We also convene working groups of the Board from time to time to contribute to specific projects such as the Precinct Development. And the board may be brought together outside of scheduled meetings to respond to unexpected governance matters that can arise.

Full Board meetings are typically held on Thursdays onsite at Footscray Community Arts from 6pm-8pm, with Subcommittee meetings held online. Preparation for meetings and any subcommittee duties will require additional time.

Board directors are expected to actively participate in the Footscray Community Arts community – by attending events and staying engaged with the program.

How does the selection process work?

Step 1: If you are interested – you should fill out an Expression of Interest <link to form> which will be reviewed by our Risk, Compliance and Governance subcommittee. You should attach your CV to the form.

Step 2: All EOIs will be assessed according to the skills and experiences we are looking for, and you may be invited to an informal interview with our Chair or other Board members.

Step 3: Following the interview, you may be invited to observe a board meeting.

Step 4: If successful, you will be recommended as a new Board appointment to the organisation’s Membership. You will be invited to share some additional information with us prior to the meeting if recommended as a new Board appointment.

What else do I need to know?

Footscray Community Arts operates with a dual governance model. As well as the Board of Directors we also seek advice and guidance from our Indigenous Advisory Group.

Board members are also invited to attend our public gatherings and events. Our staff and communities highly value the opportunity to meet members of our Board who contribute to the ongoing work of Footscray Community Arts.

Contributing as a Board member is a rewarding experience, but it also has responsibilities. All Board members will be required to be listed as a Director with ASIC and ACNC and be a ‘responsible person’ free of any financial, criminal or otherwise be prohibited from disability or child-related employment.
