Event Information

Footscray Community Arts proudly presents Rhythm in Ruby Shoes, a solo exhibition by artist Emily Dober. Known for her dynamic watercolour and gouache paintings, Emily explores themes of dance, movement, and performance, drawing inspiration from musicals and films like Mamma Mia and Strictly Ballroom. Her work is characterised by vibrant energy, intricate costumes, and bold, bright colours.

Emily’s art examines gender representation in mainstream media, celebrating body diversity and challenging conventional portrayals of women. Her creative process often involves drawing from film stills, frequently depicting female-identifying characters in moments of expression. Emily also enjoys quoting lines from films and performances that inspire her, infusing her work with a personal and nostalgic narrative.

Rhythm in Ruby Shoes marks the culmination of Emily’s two-year ArtLife Studio Residency at Footscray Community Arts. This program supports d/Deaf and Disabled artists to create impactful contemporary art and achieve ambitious artistic outcomes. The exhibition will be displayed across two galleries on site – the Entrance Gallery and Gabriel Gallery in Henderson House. It is Emily’s first large-scale solo showcase, featuring a series of paintings and drawings that celebrate the joy and complexity of dance and movement.

Rhythm in Ruby Shoes is part of the Alter State program at Arts Centre Melbourne, a celebration of disability, creativity, and culture. This inclusion highlights the significance of Emily’s work within the broader context of contemporary art and its engagement with important social themes.

Join us at Footscray Community Arts to experience the enchanting world of Rhythm in Ruby Shoes, and support Emily Dober in this significant milestone of her artistic career.
