School Holiday Workshops: Week One
Week one dates: 17–20 January, 2022
Footscray Community Arts is the place for creative kids these holidays! Our popular School Holiday Workshops return with an incredible line up of artists and activities for kids aged 6-12 years.
The Superstars program runs for four days. Each day kids do three different performing arts workshops run by a professional artists. Classes are grouped by age and every child is well supported to explore and express their creative skills. There are also plenty of opportunities to make friends, as well as making art, during recess and lunch breaks.
The Superstars workshops are:
1. Songwriting and Sounds (with Bianca Kyriacou and Isobel Caldwell)
Explore group songwriting and sound making with Izzy and B. In this collaborative workshop, you will learn how to write music, drawing inspiration from the land around us and everyone’s unique perspectives. Discover the rhythm and song that lives within your heart!
2. Clowning with The Travelling Sisters
Exploring drama, movement and comedy – kids are invited to dive into the world of the clown. Clowns love to make people laugh and to have fun. They have so much confidence and don’t mind making mistakes! The clown always tries their best and loves being on stage with their clown friends. Come along and learn an introduction to clowning with Laura Trenerry & Lucy Fox from The Travelling Sisters. We will play lots of games and exercises, get moving, perform for each other, express our silly selves and most importantly – laugh a lot!
3. Kook and Spook : Butoh with Yumi
Step inside the playful and imaginative world of Japanese Butoh, led by renowned performance artist Yumi Umiumare. This family friendly workshop is suitable for children and people of all ages. You can experience the surreal fun of Butoh dance and playful games. Moving and shaking, creating funny shapes with your body and face, you will jump headfirst into a world of transformation and shape-shifting. Yumi will cheerfully guide you to dance as animals, trees, ghosts and wind, unleashing your inner animal, kook and spook.

Meet the Artists
Bianca was singing from the moment she could talk and officially began her music training at age six with classical piano lessons. In her youth she went on to dabble in violin, guitar, drums, orchestral percussion and contemporary piano before coming full circle and settling on voice as her primary instrument. While working on her craft and building performance experience, Bianca went on to study at the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne University), receiving mentoring from Australia’s greatest musicians, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2014.
Throughout this time, she has been performing, composing, recording and improvising in a wide variety of projects, with performance experience at various venues such as the late great Bennett’s Lane, Jazzlab, Melbourne Recital Centre, Uptown Jazz Café, Howler, The Toff, Brunswick Ballroom and many others.
Bianca is passionate about teaching and sharing the joy of music with others and takes a tailored approach to each individual, understanding that everyone has their own goals, needs and learning styles. You can find Bianca teaching and mentoring at Firebird School of Music and working with YoWo Music.
Isobel Caldwell is a Hong Kong born, Naarm based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. Always engaging different parts of her creativity and her love for connecting through performance and storytelling, Isobel performs with multiple bands around town including her solo project, soul/rnb group The Mamas, wonky-rock sweethearts Quality Used Cars and soul-rock band Big Lubly. She also loves combining music and her work with young people, having experience of music making and exploration with ages 3 months to 18 years, whether as a teacher or a mentor.
Laura Trenerry & Lucy Fox from The Travelling Sisters
Laura and Lucy are two thirds of The Travelling Sisters – a multi-award winning physical comedy troupe based in Melbourne. The Sisters are known for their absurd characters, physical comedy and original music. They create both sketch & narrative live shows.

Born in Japan, Yumi is an established Butoh dancer, choreographer and creator of Butoh Cabaret works. She has been creating her distinctive style of works for 30 years and her creations are renowned for provoking visceral emotions and engaging with cultural identities with a sense of humor. Yumi’s works have been seen in numerous festivals in dance, theatre and film productions throughout Australia, Japan, Europe, New Zealand, South East Asia and South America and have received several Australian Green Room awards. As a choreographer, Yumi has worked with many socially engaged theatre projects in Australia, including communities of First Nations, refugees and culturally diverse people and also inclusive companies. She is a recipient of the fellowship from Australian Council(2015-16) and a winner of the Green Room Geoffrey Milne Memorial Award (2017). Yumi is a key figure of the international contemporary Butoh scene and artistic director of ButohOUT! festival in Melbourne since 2017, teaching and activating local and international Butoh communities. Yumi ‘s recent works focus on Dance, Tea and Spirit.
