West Writers

The West Writers program seeks to develop capacity amongst writers and storytellers across various mediums and practices in the west of Melbourne while showcasing important political, social and cultural issues.

Following on from the pilot year in 2014, the program has evolved into its current program structure which includes industry and community partners based locally and nationally. These partners include The Lifted Brow, The Emerging Writers Festival, The Queensland Poetry Festival, WrICE, World Travels, Going Down Swinging, 100 Story Building, Ascension Magazine, All the Best and Still Nomads and the Contemporary Pacific Arts Festival.

Since 2014, West Writers has been supported by 3 key mentors: Mammad Aidani, Hanifa Deen and John Weldon.

The core program structure is broken into 3 key areas: The Group, The Poetry, and The Forum.

West Writers Group Participants

West Writers Group is a collective of writers from diverse backgrounds who currently live, work or have other established links to Melbourne’s west.

West Writers — Forum

The Forum is an annual forum to encourage diverse and critically engaged conversations between writers/storytellers, readers and industry members.

West Writers — Poetry

The Poetry is an annual premier performance poetry event One Night Stanza that features a line-up of local, national and international artists.

West Writers Group

West Writers Group is an annual competitive expression of interest process in which an intake of 15 writers and storytellers who undergo a 2 year professional development program.
